Verda Lou Charles

December 14, 1933 — March 18, 2026

Pikeville, KY 41501

Verda Lou Charles, age 92, of Pikeville, Kentucky, passed away on March 18, 2026.

Born on December 14, 1933 in Pikeville, she was the daughter of Craft and Ann Holloway Morris, who preceded her in death.

Since 1978, Verda has been a member of the Meta Baptist Church. Verda was proud of her career as a nurse and later enjoyed working at Velocity Market, where she was affectionately known as “Granny.” Many would argue she was the University of Kentucky’s biggest fan, and she truly enjoyed cheering them on every chance she got. Those who knew her well will remember her strong presence, sharp wit, and unmistakable personality. She took great pride in the large family she built—her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her children Jennifer (James) Slone, Susie (Jesse) Mullins, Jessica (Steve) Coleman, along with her 7 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She was a devoted sister to Charles (Faye) Morris, Harold (Ellen) Morris, and Mitchell (Ann) Morris. In addition, to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jess Charles.

Visitation will be held March 21, 2026 from 12-2 p.m. at Meta Baptist Church. A service to honor her life will be held at 2 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Morris Blackburn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests for donations to be made to Meta Baptist Church, 8807 Meta Highway, Pikeville, KY 41501.

The family would like to thank Riverview Health Care Center for all their care and patience over the years. Granny will be remembered affectionately by her family and all who knew her.
