Peggy Sykes, a remarkable lady, a beloved educator and dedicated community member, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2026, at the age of 85. Born on August 22, 1940, in Ashcamp, Kentucky, Peggy devoted her life to the pursuit of education and the nurturing of young minds, leaving an indelible mark on the communities she served in Brevard County, Florida, and Pike County, Kentucky.

Peggy graduated from Elkhorn City High School and proudly earned her bachelor's degree in education, English, and physical education from Pikeville College. Her academic journey culminated in her master's plus and Rank I in education from Morehead State University. Throughout her career, she was recognized as a lifetime mentor through her involvement with the National Educators Association and the Kentucky Education Association (KEA), offering guidance and support to countless educators and students alike. Among her proudest accomplishments was her integral role in founding The Artists Collaborative Theatre, a testament to her passion for the arts and commitment to fostering creativity within her community.

Peggy's family was a cornerstone of her life. She is survived by her loving husband, Tommy C. Sykes, their children, Stephanie Richard(s) Sykes and Scott C. Sykes, and her nephew, Larry Ramey. Her memory will be cherished by them as well as by many students and colleagues who had the privilege of knowing her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Acy Childers and Goldie Tackett Childers, and siblings, Richard "Dickie" Childers, Patty Childers Ramey, and Bobby Childers. Each of them played a significant role in shaping Peggy's unwavering spirit and dedication to life.

Visitation for Peggy Sykes will be held at Lucas & Son Funeral Home in Pikeville, Kentucky, on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM, with special church services beginning at 7 PM. On Thursday, March 5, 2026, visitation will be from 6 PM to 11:00 PM, with a Celebration of Life Service beginning at 7 PM. Funeral services will take place at the same location on Friday, March 6, 2026, at 1:00 PM, with burial following in the Childers Cemetery on Elkhorn Creek. The community is invited to celebrate the life and legacy of this remarkable woman who touched so many lives.
