Nellie Irick Wright

Wright, Nellie “Ninnie”, age 100, of Beefhide Creek, Kentucky passed away Tuesday, December 20, 2022. She was a graduate of Dorton High School in 1939 and went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in 1956, as well as a Masters degree in 1962 from Morehead State University. Nellie started her career as an educator at the age of 21, her service in this capacity to the children of Pike county continued with minor interruptions for her own education until she became a Librarian at Virgie Elementary School in 1961. Nellie continued in this position until 1972 when she became Guidance Counselor at Virgie High School. In total, she helped to shape the minds of eastern Kentucky children for thirty-eight years. Nellie’s talents were many; she was an accomplished writer and poet with many published works, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma. Nellie was a member of Beefhide First Alliance Church where she taught adult Sunday school for 45 years. She also served as the secretary for the church. Nellie will always be remembered as a stalwart member of the community and a passionate advocate for friends and neighbors. Nellie was preceded in death by her husband Charlie Wright of 52 yrs. She is survived by three children, Gladys Murray of Flatwoods, Kentucky; Sonja Bowling of Beefhide Creek, Kentucky; Michael (Belinda) Wright also of Beefhide Creek. Five grandchildren, Ed (Missy) Murray of Greenup, Kentucky; Quinn (Jennie Ann) Bowling of Jenkins, Kentucky; Rod (Terri Jo) Bowling of Jenkins; April (Jarrid) Deaton also of Beefhide Creek, Kentucky; Canella (Terry) Hillman of Clintwood, Virginia; Five great grandchildren, Roxanne Hillman, India Hillman, Tyler Bowling, Ethan Bowling, Cole Murray. Friends may call from 5-9pm Thursday, December 22 at Beefhide First Alliance Church, 989 Beefhide Creek, Jenkins, Kentucky. Service will be Friday, December 23 at 1pm at the church. Burial will follow at Irick Family Cemetery, Old Beefhide Road. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Beefhide First Alliance Church in Nellie’s memory
