Mitchell, Kossuth Mayer "Mitch" age 80, died Sep. 7, 2022 at the V. A. nursing home in Hazard, KY. He was born August 10, 1942 in Lower Peach Tree, Alabama. Mitch proudly served his country in the U.S. Army for 23 years, retiring in 1982 as a Command Sergeant Major. He was decorated in all periods of service. In his second career, he received his doctorate of Business, and taught students at Alice Lloyd College, Pikeville University and Averett College in Danville, Virginia. Once Dr. Mitchell hung up his hat teaching, he served as the associate pastor at the Bridge of Hope Church in Pikeville, KY. Through his distinguished military career, teaching career and most importantly, his service to his Lord, Mitch touched countless lives. His simple motto was “Be ready.” He was passionate for all to receive Jesus as Lord and Savior. In addition to his parents and 6 brothers and sisters, Mitch was preceded in death by his son, Kossuth M. Mitchell II and a daughter, Kristi Lynn Cheatham. Mitch met the “sunshine” of his life while serving as the Sergeant Major of Army ROTC at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia. He and Sandy Shafer were married on May 3, 1982. In addition to his wife, Mitch is survived by three children: Sherry Roy of Santa Rosa, CA; Lenore Pollard (Bobby) of Hindman, KY and Beth Shafer (Chris) of Statesboro, GA. Mitch will also be missed by 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He is survived by his brother Clarence Mitchell (Sylvia) of Fayetteville, GA and Zadok Mitchell (Annell) of Fulton, AL. The family will receive friends on Thursday, Sep. 8 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Lucas & Sons Funeral Home. The funeral will be on Friday at 1:00 p.m. at the funeral home, followed by burial at the Davidson Memorial Garden at Ivel, Ky.
