James T. "Tommy" Spurlock

August 26, 1943 — August 29, 2025

James T. “Tommy” Spurlock, born August 26, 1943, in Pikeville, Kentucky, went home to be with the Lord on August 29, 2025, at Pikeville Medical Center after a courageous battle.

Tommy was known to most as “everybody’s buddy.” Whether you needed a skilled plumber, an electrician, or just someone you could count on, Tommy was the one you called. A proud graduate of Virgie High School, Class of 1961, he later earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Pikeville College in 1967. But it was his hands-on work, attention to detail, and love for helping others that truly defined him.

There wasn’t much Tommy couldn’t do—he was a fixer-upper, a jack of all trades, a detail guy through and through, a wannabe hot rodder, and a hunter who loved the outdoors. But the titles he was proudest of were Dad, Poppy, and Great-Granddad. His family was the joy of his life, and he poured his heart into them every single day.

Tommy married the love of his life, Doris Lowe Spurlock, June 1, 1964 and together they built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and family.

He is survived by his son, Steve F. (Shereena) Spurlock of Pikeville, Kentucky, and his daughter, Rachel S. (Tim) Baker of Lawrenceburg, Kentucky. He was the proud Poppy to his grandchildren: Hannah Grace Baker, Mason Howard (Allisan) Baker, and Sarah Kathryn Baker, and the doting Great-Poppy to Heidi Jane Baker.

Also cherishing his memory are his sisters-in-law, Phyllis Lowe (the late Steve) Friend and Helen Lowe (the late Harry E.) Altman, and his brother-in-law, Tim (the late Blanche) Swanston. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris; his parents, James T. Spurlock Sr. and Gearldine Compton Spurlock; and his brother-in-law, Kenneth (the late Barb) Lowe.

Family and friends are invited to gather in love and remembrance on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at Salem Gospel Fellowship in Pikeville, Kentucky—where Tommy was a member for nearly 6 decades. Visitation will be from 2:00–4:00 PM, with the funeral service following at 4:00 PM, led by Steve Spurlock and Larry Penix. All are welcome to join the family for dinner following the service in Salem’s fellowship hall.

Tommy’s life was one of love, generosity, hard work, and faith. His laughter, kindness, and steady presence will forever remain in the hearts of everyone blessed to know him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that tax-deductible donations be made to Big Sandy Community and Technical College in the name of Spurlock Plumbing and Electric, honoring Dad’s life’s work. Donate by clicking here.

The Family Wishes to Express Their Gratitude: We want to thank our friends and family for being by our side through this journey. Our heartfelt appreciation goes to the ambulance crews, dispatchers, hospice staff, and medical teams who cared for Daddy with such compassion. A very special thank you goes to Nancy, Tina, Paula, and Audrea-for loving Dad and caring for him as if he were your own. We love you dearly and will always consider you not just friends, but family.
