Austin Akers, a dedicated coal miner and beloved member of his community, passed away on December 14, 2025, at the Pikeville Medical Center. Born on October 17, 1950, in Floyd County, Kentucky, to the late, Oscar and Annie Evans Akers, Austin lived a life filled with resilience and hard work, traits that defined both his career and personal relationships.
As a coal miner, Austin spent countless hours working in the heart of the mountains, helping to provide for his family and ensuring that those around him could live with comfort and security. His contribution to the community was marked not only by his tireless labor but also by his unwavering spirit and kindness to others.
Austin is survived by his daughter, Sabrina Kay Akers, who was a source of immeasurable joy to him. His three sisters, Avonell Spears, Amalene Damron, and Marlene Spears, cherished their brother and held many fond memories close to their hearts. Also remaining are his former wife and lifelong friend, Patricia Akers, whose bond with Austin endured over the years, illustrating the deep connections he fostered throughout his life.
He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him. The family welcomes friends and loved ones to celebrate Austin's remarkable life. Visitation will take place Wednesday December 17, 2025, at Toler Creek Freewill Baptist Church, located at 4423 Toler Creek Road in Harold, Kentucky. Church services will be Wednesday and Thursday night at 7pm, the funeral service will follow on Friday, December 19, 2025, beginning at 1:00 PM.
Austin is predeceased by his brothers Evan, Wendell, and Lovel Akers, as well as his sisters Magalene Patrick and Sherlene Akers. Their memories will forever be entwined with his legacy, offering comfort in the knowledge that they now rest together.
In this time of sorrow, we celebrate Austin's steadfast spirit, his deep-rooted love for family, and the impact he made in the lives he touched.
